Human Flag Progression Tree
Lateral coronal-plane straight-arm push/pull lever on a vertical pole or stall bars (OG Levels 6–10)
The Human Flag is a lateral coronal-plane isometric hold where the athlete suspends their body horizontally perpendicular to a vertical pole or stall bars. The bottom arm acts as a straight-arm overhead press pillar while the top arm performs a straight-arm lateral pull, bridged by intense external and internal oblique and gluteus medius tension. Athletes should achieve 12 strict Pull-Ups, 10 HSPUs, and a 45-second Side Plank before training tucked lateral flag holds.
Connective Tissue & Leverage Note: The bottom arm bears compressive pushing load and requires strong scapular elevation/protraction to avoid shoulder impingement, while the top arm bears tensile pulling load.

Human Flag
12 Strict Pull-Ups + 8 Wall HSPUs + 15s Vertical Flag Hold
3 sets × 8s horizontal hold per side (left & right) (Logging Type: DURATION)
- Use a supinated (underhand) or mixed vertical grip on the bottom hand and Push away aggressively
- Pull down and in with the top hand while stacking the top hip directly over the bottom hip
- Prevent torso rotation toward the ground; keep the chest facing strictly forward

Frequently Asked Questions — Human Flag
Which grip is strongest for the bottom hand in a Human Flag?
On a vertical pole, a supinated grip (thumb pointing down, palm facing the athlete) on the bottom hand allows external shoulder rotation and locks the elbow cleanly into pushing alignment.
